Solar Panel Cleaning

With the major focus on renewable energy, solar panels are being installed on the roofs of buildings all over America. Solar panels are basically covered with normal glass that should be cleaned. Solar panel manufacturers recommend regular cleaning for long-term performance and increased energy generation.

Smaller panels can be cleaned with the typical washer/mop and squeegee technique. There are several soap solutions available, like Titan Lab's Glass Gleam Solar which should be considered. Many window cleaners are now using their water-fed poles to clean solar panels; especially large areas where the worker cannot walk between the panels. The pure water is a great cleaning agent and will suffice if the panels are cleaned regularly.

Glass Protection — Another trend in the solar panel cleaning sector is the protection of the glass so it better cleans when it rains, and reduces the ability of pollutants to adhere to the glass. This service should be charged for in addition to the cleaning, and may need to be reapplied every year or so depending on the environment.

Top Ten Reasons for Window Cleaners to clean solar panels
  1. Solar Panels have, and will continue to become more and more common on rooftops.
  2. Panels must be clean and free of debris so that they can produce as much energy as possible.
  3. Window cleaners are already great at keeping glass spotless.
  4. Adds a new line of business for window cleaners who already have the required skills and the majority of the required tools.
  5. Window cleaners will enjoy very low overhead to set up an additional revenue stream.
  6. It allows window cleaners to market themselves as environmentally conscious companies.
  7. Most homeowners do not want to climb up on their roofs to clean panels.
  8. Most window cleaners are seeing solar panels on at least some of their existing clients' roofs.
  9. It is a simple up-sell to an existing client to suggest washing panels while the windows are being cleaned.
  10. According to USA today energy prices are surging by at least 30% making the energy produced by panels even more valuable.

We would recommend charging about 20% more than a typical window cleaner would ask for a skylight. This would cover the use of the required safety equipment and allow a higher price because of the high profile nature of the panels. A frame work of price per kilowatt might be helpful so the cleaners could charge more for larger systems. A typical home has around four to five kilowatts of panels on the roof which is approximately 300 square feet of glass. This method would require very little labor to clean the system well.

"Solar panel cleaning is extremely important to achieve maximum output of a solar electric system," said Dr. Patrina Eiffert, CEO, SolarFrameWorks. "The financial impact of a clean solar panel is immediate.
