I need to get mold off the side of a vinyl siding of a house. What is the best Product to use??

That is a good question. I have been cleaning vinyl siding for about 10 years now. I have been using a bleach, liquid detergent, and water mix. It does a wonderful job. Of course bleach is very controversial these days. There are products on the market that do not contain bleach, but claim to be very effective at removing mold from vinyl siding. Of course they are very expensive. I am getting ready to do some experimenting with some powder chlorine (contains sodium hypochlorite), a detergent, and a thickening agent to make it cling to the wall. I'll let you know how it goes.

Paul, Simple Cherry is a good product to use in helping the bleach "cling" to the siding. We tried it last fall and had very good results. You can use dawn dishsoap as well, however the simple cherry seemed to help the bleaches dwell time alittle more. It has a great smell as well.

Make sure that the hypochlorite is the right ratio. That means you need to find out what ratio your injector or x-jet is putting out. By the end of it, you will want the hypochlorite cut about 12-13:1 (if you're using 12.5%) or if you're using clorox then more like 4-5:1. Simple cherry works, but mixing is a pain. Also, leaving most soaps or detergents in your bleach will shorten the shelf life of your bleach. You need to either mix only what you'll need or use a surfactant that won't interact that way the bleach. My local PW distributor sells a product called Emcol Lo. Used to be amonyx lo. I have no idea where you can order it, but it won't hurt the bleach. I think there's another product called barlox that works the same. You only need a capful per 5 gals of bleach. Goes a long way and very little mixing to do.

Bleach can turn Vinyl yellow and can also rot a product with excessive use plus its not healthy for you,, ( i presume you mean plastic right when you say vinyl ? )

Don't we wash our clothing with this! why would is be unsafe on the exterior of our home? ESP in such low concentrates.

Thanks Rick! Those are great tips. We've done similar combo with bleach and warm water on siding that's almost borderline wood rot, and just used a light scrubber with a soft towel to blot the patches dry. It was a similar technique I used on the limestone steps in our backyard years ago when mold and moss growth appeared.
