Siding and Exterior Cleaning

Gentle Cleaning vs Pressure Wash on Structures
Cleaning a house or commercial structure without using a pressure washer.

Pressure washers are great for walkways, driveways, decks and fences, but great care must be exercised when pressure washing structures made of wood and other sensitive substrates. High pressure structure cleaning can cause seals to be blown, caulking to be removed or siding could be lifted up off the building. Many building owners are concerned for the integrity of the surface and are looking for gentle exterior cleaning, often with Green Chemicals.

These issues and others have caused many professionals to gravitate toward gentle building cleaning.

Low Pressure Cleaning
Many of the chemicals described here can be applied via low pressure spraying or for smaller areas with a bucket and brush. Typically the chemical is diluted and poured into a hand held or backpack sprayer. Sprayers can be pumped manually or battery pump driven. Backpack sprayers will save you time on the job as you have more freedom with your hands to perform other tasks such as agitation with a brush and rinsing.

Brushes
There are many brush styles and bristle strengths available. They are meant to be matched to the surface you are cleaning. Polished or painted surfaces will merit softer bristles. Where siding, concrete, stone and brick will demand a stiffer bristle.

Green Cleaners
Green Cleaners are available that allow for lower environmental impact when cleaning the structure. Mold and mildew cleaners are listed in a separate section.

Testing
All cleaners and solvents should be tested in an inconspicuous spot to be certain it will not discolor or remove the coating from the surface. Record your test results for each job you do. Read the product labels to insure it is the correct product for your correct application.

Water-Fed Poles and Exterior Cleaning
For light to moderate cleaning pure water from a DI resin system can often be enough to perform a great cleaning, pure water will attract the dirt off the surface and allow a clean rinse. All you may need is pure water. A Tufted Nylon Brush or a natural Boar Hair brush will make the task easier and save you time.

When using a Water-Fed pole and the job needs more than pure water, you can incorporate a DEMA in-line chemical injector and use your WFP with tap water to perform a chemical clean and agitation. The DEMA injector will deliver chemical cleaners right to the surface and brush with the correct dilution rates to perform a great quick chemical clean, then switch to your DI water for that pure water rinse and the results are a great surface clean.

The cleaners here are for general cleaning and stain removal, on various building surfaces.
