Tip Sizes for Soft-Washing & Pressure Washing


In this post, we'll explain how to interpret tips correctly, how to use them effectively, how to arrange them, and how to prevent using them incorrectly, which might cause long-term harm to an engine or pump or even spoil the surface you're trying to make seem nicer.

The fact that each tip serves a different purpose makes tip degrees and orifice sizes significant. It's also crucial to understand how to read advice: Here is a description of how they operate.

The PSI, not the GPM, is altered when the nozzle size is altered. Consider it... Your pump only understands how to deliver 8 GPM at a time. It is reasonable to state that your neighbors will likely get wounded if you attach a garden hose to the water supply on your house, screw on an adjustable spray nozzle you purchase from the neighborhood shop, set it to "Jet," push the trigger, and spray straight into their faces.

The spray bar on most surface cleaners has two or three points. Determine the GPM rating you need for each tip after selecting the degree you choose to utilize (first two digits). You should first determine the GPM of the pressure washer you are using. Then, find out how many tips your surface cleaner's spray bar has. To match the GPM of your machine, you need properly distribute the GPM of the spray bar's tips. Alternately, you will need to slightly "oversize" your tips if you wish to lower the PSI.

Imagine you wanted to reach as near to 3500 PSI as possible using a pressure washer that has an 8GPM at 3500 PSI. You'd have to move quickly:

(2) 2504 tips, or perhaps (2) 4004 tips.
Because 04(GPM) x 2 = 8GPM, the final two digits are the magic number.

When surface cleaning and even pressure washing with a gun, we strongly advise oversizing your tips since it makes your pressure washer work much less hard and you can get the same or better results by applying the right detergent to the type of surface and stain that you are cleaning beforehand. For instance:

You will have better results if you oversize your tips and pre-treat the surface with a mixture of SH (Sodium Hypochlorite) and a good surfactant like Apple Wash, Dragon Grip, or Secret Agent when cleaning something that has organic stains like: Algae, Moss, Fungus, or Lichen.
(Pre-treating can be done in a variety of methods, such as down streaming, 12 volt pump direct application, X-Jetting, pump up sprayer, and more.)

The same holds true for a region with oil or grease stains. Before you wash it away, use some Agent Blue, EBC Multi Purpose De-Greaser, F9 Double Eagle, or even Gold Assassin and let it sit for a while. While PSI is fantastic and can be used when necessary, there are times when a good detergent and your maximum quantity of flow (GPM) can work just as well and with less risk of harm than oversizing your tips and lowering your PSI.

Use products from Front 9 Restorations like F9 BARC, F9 Groundskeeper, or F9 Efflorescence if you have any inorganic stains. With all of the recent wildfires brought on by climate change, EBC Restorer can also be administered through an injector at a ratio of 10:1 to quickly remove fire retardant powders, which has become a very common and extremely lucrative service.

Examining the nozzle's condition is important since an orifice can vary or become clogged with repeated use. One sand grain can make its way to the nozzle and clog it up if it enters your high pressure line. At this stage, you'll need to disassemble the nozzle and force the nozzle out using a dental pick. Maintaining your equipment above the ground when not in use and avoiding washing material in the direction of your equipment are two simple strategies to prevent this. Additionally, your hose should have a high pressure ball valve on the end so that whenever you start your engine, you may let any sand grains run out of the hose before you start your surface cleaner.

You should frequently switch out your cleaning tips, especially while cleaning surfaces. The nozzle might erode naturally as a result of the water being driven through the minuscule holes for hours at a time, every day. Don't be that person who never thinks changing the tips or performing any basic maintenance; a 25 degree nozzle will eventually convert into a 0 degree.

In addition, because of the high pressure and low height of the nozzles, there will be a rebound effect, which will cause the sand to bounce off the ground and begin to corrode the nozzles and even the spray bar. The best course of action is to buy one or two extra spray bars that fit your surface cleaner and keep them on hand before you really need them.

Always keep extra tips on hand when it comes to tips. Purchase a compact box with dividers for yourself, stock up on the tip sizes you might require, and then categorize and label each one.

Put the appropriate ratchet and socket inside the box that will be used to swap out the threaded nozzles. Teflon tape and sealant should also be available. The majority of us wouldn't think twice spending $200 to $300 on something for our business, but we are hesitant to stock up on tips and other things. In all honesty, $300's worth of tips and quick connects would last you a year or two and prevent expensive downtime in the event of a problem.
